Obi’s ADC Defection: Atiku’s Influence and the Illusion of Coalition Politics

Obi’s ADC Defection: Atiku’s Influence and the Illusion of Coalition Politics

Peter Obi’s switch to the ADC reignites familiar questions about strategy, trust, and power in our party system. On paper it looks like coalition-building. In reality, the ADC is Atiku Abubakar’s project and his decades of delegate politics almost predetermine the outcome. In a system where delegates are bought, money trumps momentum or moral authority. The key question is whether Atiku will yield to Obi’s momentum in 2027 or simply use this move to neutralise him and inherit Obidient energy. History suggests the latter. Nigeria lacks a strong, transparent party that attracts principled leaders. Until patriots build a dominant, credible platform, defections like Obi’s will be about survival, not hope.

What do people think Obi gains from joining Atiku's ADC project, beyond the surface promise of coalition politics?

I agree, Obi likely sees a chance to grow his reach and win more hearts together.

I get the skepticism, but perhaps Obi sees genuine chance to expand grassroots support beyond mere political optics.

On paper the coalition looks strategic, but Atiku's deep delegate networks seem to steer outcomes before anyone casts a vote.

I worry this defection is less about reform and more about securing Atiku's backing for Obi's personal ambitions.

Obi needs to articulate clear policy goals within the ADC framework, not just rely on Atiku's grassroots machinery for legitimacy.
