Israel Celebrates 78th Independence Day with Barbecues and Beach Festivities

Israel Celebrates 78th Independence Day with Barbecues and Beach Festivities — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Israelis enjoyed warm April sunshine on Independence Day, flocking to parks, promenades and nature sites. Families and friends fired up grills in Jerusalem’s Sacher Park and flew kites under clear blue skies. Along the Tel Aviv coastline, beaches and the Charles Clore Park filled with picnickers and cookouts. The scent of grilled meat drifted over the sand as people swam in the Mediterranean and lounged on lawn chairs. In Jaffa’s Old City, tourists and locals crowded hummus shops and waterfront restaurants. Sailboats and watercraft skimmed the waves, while visitors in white and blue soaked up the festive atmosphere across beaches, streams and parks.

I agree, warm weather and communal spirit push folks outdoors for grills and beach fun.

I'm not convinced barbecues and beaches are that special here; lots of countries enjoy outdoor parties on their holidays.

I notice most people flock to Tel Aviv beaches and parks. But does everyone really get equal access to these public spaces on that day?

Barbecues and kite flying look fun, but aren't these celebrations overlooking deeper national issues that citizens also face?

If you plan to join the festivities, arrive early to claim a good spot at parks or the beach and bring extra water.
