Super Eagles Lose Over ₦1bn as FIFA Unveils Record 2026 World Cup Funding

Super Eagles Lose Over ₦1bn as FIFA Unveils Record 2026 World Cup Funding — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have missed qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, losing out on a record prize package worth over one billion naira. At a FIFA Council meeting in Vancouver, officials confirmed a 15% rise in total funding for the expanded 48-nation tournament. Qualified teams will share $871 million, with a $10 million qualification bonus, $2.5 million in preparation grants and over $16 million for logistics and ticketing support. None of these incentives will reach Nigeria after the Super Eagles’ defeat to DR Congo ended their campaign. This marks a second consecutive World Cup absence following the 2022 qualifying miss. FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasised that the funding increase reflects the organisation’s strongest financial position ever and its commitment to global football development.

In which areas do you think the team should invest first to make up for that lost funding?

But is it really about the missing ₦1bn? Maybe on-field performance and management issues matter more than funding.

A 15% rise in total funding is impressive, yet Nigeria still fails to secure a spot, raising questions about our football strategy.

Missing qualification isn't solely a funding issue; other federations adapt better with less support while we lag behind.

Investing in local coaching education and league structure could improve long-term performance more than chasing one-off World Cup payouts.
