How to Secure Germany’s Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) and Find a Job

How to Secure Germany’s Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) and Find a Job — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Chancenkarte, or Opportunity Card, lets non-EU citizens live in Germany for up to a year without a prearranged job offer. You can work part-time (up to 20 hours weekly) to support yourself while you search for full-time employment. You qualify by holding a fully recognized foreign degree or vocational qualification (minimum two years’ training) or by scoring at least 6 points under Germany’s point system. Points are awarded for qualifications, age, work experience, language skills, prior German residence, and high-demand professions. You must also prove you can fund your stay for 12 months. This typically means a blocked account with about €1,091 per month, a part-time job offer, or a financial guarantee. Valid health insurance and a visa fee (around €75) are also required. Application procedures vary by country. Contact the German embassy or consulate in Nigeria for full application guidelines.

It seems the Chancenkarte's one-year timeframe and 20-hour work limit may not be enough to fully establish yourself professionally in Germany.

The guide may overlook real challenges like language exams, long recognition waits, and competition for part-time roles in major cities.

Start by having your documents fully translated and pre-evaluated by German authorities to shorten recognition timelines.
