Tinubu Orders Mandatory NIN Registration for All Nigerians by December 2026

Tinubu Orders Mandatory NIN Registration for All Nigerians by December 2026 — 1 of 3
1 / 3

President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to enroll every Nigerian in the national identity database before the end of 2026. According to the NIMC Director-General on a recent TV programme, the commission has already registered over 137 million Nigerians. The Federal Government is stepping up efforts to reach millions who are yet to be captured. NIMC will expand operations beyond urban centres and deploy teams directly into communities nationwide. This ensures no citizen is left out of the registration drive. To meet the deadline, the commission is partnering with organisations under the World Bank–backed Identification for Development initiative. These partnerships will boost mass enrolment and strengthen data-collection infrastructure.

Haha, you're spot on—it'll take a major push to hit that December 2026 NIN deadline.

The NIMC says over one hundred million already registered, but rural coverage still seems patchy; data accuracy remains uncertain in many areas.

Mandating every citizen by 2026 sounds rigid; forcing deadlines without fixing registration infrastructure could worsen delays and frustration.

Local community centres should organise mobile registration drives in under-served areas, paired with outreach campaigns to guide citizens through the NIN process.
