Anambra Assembly Pledges New Rent-Control Bill to Ease Student Housing Costs

The Anambra State House of Assembly has announced plans to introduce a law aimed at curbing steep rent hikes and exploitative agency fees in student communities. Leaders in the Assembly, including the Majority Leader and the Chairman of the Education Committee, praised protesting students for their peaceful demonstration and assured that the bill is already in the drafting stage. They say it will regulate arbitrary landlord charges and protect families from sudden cost spikes. Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students led protests at the Assembly complex to demand uniform rent standards and reasonable agency fees. With lawmakers’ commitment to swift action, tenants in Awka and surrounding areas may soon see more affordable and transparent housing conditions.

This might shift costs elsewhere, though—landlords often find loopholes or hike utility fees instead of rent.

Student unions should work with the Assembly to monitor implementation, document abuses, and report any agency fee violations promptly.
