NDLEA Cracks Down on Drug Trafficking: 28,000 Opioid Pills, Cannabis and Meth Seized at Lagos Airport
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency thwarted multiple attempts to smuggle illicit drugs through Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, and a courier firm in Lagos. On 20 March, officers arrested 37-year-old Friday Ehianuka as he tried to board an international flight with 2,698 tramadol 225mg pills hidden inside skin-lightening cream containers. He later admitted he stood to earn euros for delivering the consignment to Italy. Two days earlier, a passenger bound for Milan was caught with 23,150 tramadol 225mg pills, 4,000 tapentadol 250mg tablets and 1,320 tramadol 100mg pills carefully concealed in two winter jackets. The total opioid haul from both suspects exceeded 28,000 pills. Meanwhile, NDLEA officers at a Lagos courier facility intercepted one kilogram of cannabis and 158 grams of methamphetamine concealed in carton walls. All suspects now face prosecution under Nigeria’s drug laws.
