ONSA’s Multi-Agency Rescue Operation Secures Freedom for 44 Kidnapped Oyo Pupils and Teachers

Over weeks, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) led intelligence gathering and security operations to rescue 44 pupils and teachers kidnapped from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026. Working through the National Counter Terrorism Centre, ONSA coordinated the Nigerian Army, Special Forces, Police, DSS, NIA, NSCDC and local vigilantes. The operation combined investigations with precision actions aimed at dismantling the kidnappers’ network and locating their hideouts in Old Oyo National Park and beyond. Multiple arrests across Oyo and other states disrupted the terrorists’ logistics and informant network. Under sustained pressure and with no collateral harm to the victims, the group released all captives. The rescued pupils and teachers are now receiving medical care before reuniting with their families. Security officials commended the strategic support from national leadership and urged Nigerians to share credible information to help safeguard lives.

True, getting all agencies to sync intel and resources must've been like herding cats, but they pulled it off nicely!

It's impressive to rescue all 44 pupils and teachers, but I wonder why it took weeks before any results emerged.

Surely such large-scale operations always face delays, yet blaming ONSA alone overlooks how complex hostage situations can get.

Communities near kidnapping hotspots should set up early alert networks and collaborate closely with security agencies ahead of any threats.
