Customs Denies Smuggling, Revenue Leakage and Recruitment Irregularities Allegations

The Nigeria Customs Service has rejected allegations of increased smuggling, revenue leakage, recruitment irregularities and manipulation of succession within the agency. The Service said enforcement operations along the Seme, Idiroko, Ilaro, Ipokia and Igbeti-Kishi border corridors remain active, citing regular seizures. It also defended the use of the “846” valuation code, saying it is a monitored digital process for vehicles with non-standard identification numbers and requires additional approval. Customs said its recent ASC II recruitment exercise was conducted under the approval of the Nigeria Customs Service Board and remains subject to medical and background checks. It added that promotions and succession are guided by public service rules, merit, seniority and available vacancies. The agency said it remains open to oversight by the Ministry of Finance, National Assembly, anti-graft agencies and other statutory bodies, and that officers found culpable of misconduct will face disciplinary action and possible prosecution.
