UAE Becomes First Arab Nation to Ban Under-15s from Social Media

UAE Becomes First Arab Nation to Ban Under-15s from Social Media

The UAE cabinet has approved new rules setting 15 as the minimum age for personal social media accounts. Children under this age cannot create, use, or operate accounts even with parental consent. Platforms must enforce these age checks and block under-15s from features like commenting, sharing, joining public groups, and direct messaging. Users aged 15 and 16 will still join but with extra safeguards: age-appropriate content filters, limits on interactions with strangers, screen-time tools, and parental supervision options. This move makes the UAE the first Arab country to impose a strict social media age limit. It follows global concerns over harmful content, unsafe interactions, excessive screen time, and data privacy risks for young users.
