The Uncomfortable Truth Behind Nigeria’s Salary Debate
I’ve noticed that when Nigerians debate salaries, pain often drowns out perspective. Employees feel insulted by ₦80k or ₦100k pay as transport, food, and rent costs soar. Corporate buzzwords like ‘commitment’ and ‘ownership mindset’ feel hollow when wages barely cover survival. Yet financial stress also undermines focus and creativity. A mind in survival mode struggles to perform at a high level. From an employer’s view, pay reflects value creation—skill rarity, revenue impact, and replaceability matter more than effort alone. Most Nigerian businesses battle high diesel costs, unstable power, inflation, and unpredictable taxes. Some owners aren’t as flush as believed. Still, others use economic hardship to justify stagnant wages and avoid fair pay. Ultimately, neither side holds all the answers; the market rewards value and positioning above effort.
