Why the South East Needs a Smart Agriculture and Food Security Corridor
The South East relies heavily on climate-sensitive fruits and vegetables transported over long distances from Northern Nigeria. This raises transport costs, increases spoilage, weakens food quality, and leaves markets exposed to insecurity, fuel price hikes, flooding, and poor roads. The proposed South East Smart Agriculture and Food Security Corridor would build a more resilient regional food system. It would combine climate-smart farming, protected cultivation, smart irrigation, renewable energy, AI-driven agriculture, cold-chain logistics, processing facilities, and digital market platforms. The goal is year-round food production, lower post-harvest losses, better access to fresh produce, and new jobs for young people in farming, technology, logistics, engineering, and agro-processing. The South East has fertile land, skilled people, and strong commercial networks that could help it become a major producer of high-value food crops rather than mainly a consumer. Agriculture should be treated as strategic infrastructure. A coordinated smart-agriculture corridor could strengthen food security and create a more self-reliant South East economy.
