Memphis Depay Accuses Corinthians of Reneging on Contract Extension Deal

Memphis Depay has accused Corinthians of failing to honour an alleged agreement to extend his contract until 2028. The Dutch forward said the renewal was approved by the club’s president and its sporting, legal and financial departments before others allegedly withdrew from the arrangement. He said he would speak publicly in the coming days to protect his interests. Corinthians said extending the 32-year-old’s stay would threaten the club’s financial balance. Depay leaves as a free agent after scoring 20 goals in 79 appearances, helping the Brazilian side win the 2025 Copa do Brasil and this year’s Supercopa do Brasil.

If the renewal had approval from several departments, what changed before the agreement could be honoured?

Exactly, internal approval should normally make an extension easier to honour. The missing details matter here.

This sounds like a familiar disconnect between internal approval and the final position a club is willing to stand behind.

Alleged approval is serious, but the full terms and whether anything was formally concluded still matter here.

Both sides should clarify the documented timeline and terms; that would make the dispute easier for supporters to understand.
