Ex-Edo LGA Chairmen Demand Local Governments as Frontline Security Responders
Former local government council chairmen in Edo State demand immediate integration of LGAs into Nigeria’s security architecture. They argue that Abuja and state capitals alone cannot defeat banditry, kidnapping, cultism, and armed robbery. In their “LG Charter on Insecurity 2026,” they identify root causes such as unemployment, corruption, porous borders, moral decline, governance failure, and millions of out-of-school children. They propose a Security-for-Jobs Programme with ₦500 million per LGA annually to employ youths in community policing, agro-rangers, and infrastructure brigades. They call for legal empowerment of local chairmen to lead joint security committees with the military, police, DSS, traditional rulers, and vigilantes. Other proposals include direct security votes to LGAs, special grants for border areas, mobile courts for fast-track justice, and local funding for CCTV and streetlights from EFCC recoveries. They also demand constitutional amendments for state police with LGA commands, quarterly publication of LG security scorecards, and allocation of 20% of the national defence budget directly to LGAs. They warn that without grassroots action, insecurity will continue to displace communities and threaten national stability.
