Tinubu Signs ₦68.32 Trn 2026 Budget, Extends 2025 Spending Deadline to June 2026

President Bola Tinubu has signed the 2026 Appropriation Bill of ₦68.32 trillion into law. He also approved an extension of the 2025 budget implementation period to June 30, 2026. The new budget, effective April 1, allocates ₦4.799 trillion for statutory transfers and ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing. Recurrent expenditure is set at ₦15.4 trillion, while ₦32.2 trillion is earmarked for capital projects. With capital spending making up about half of the total, the plan underscores the administration’s focus on infrastructure, economic stability, national security and inclusive growth. The presidency expects the extension to boost project completion and value for public funds. President Tinubu directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies to use resources transparently and efficiently. He praised the National Assembly’s swift passage of the budget and reaffirmed his economic agenda on fiscal reforms, revenue generation and strategic investments.

True, it could allow contractors more breathing space to finish quality work and reduce the pressure of tight deadlines.

The new budget's ₦68.32 trillion allocation still shows heavy spending, yet I'm not convinced it tackles revenue shortfalls or inflation concerns.

Some claim extending the 2025 budget gives more breathing room, but doesn't it risk encouraging procrastination and delaying critical projects?

To make this budget effective, prioritise transparent tracking of statutory transfers and set clear milestones for project disbursements before June 2026.
