Fresh Attacks Kill Over 50 in Plateau Despite Tinubu’s Peace Promise
Less than 24 hours after President Tinubu visited Plateau State on April 3 and pledged to end recurring killings, violence erupted again across multiple communities. Between April 3 and May 10, at least 14 separate attacks left over 50 people dead and many injured in Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bassa, Mangu and Jos South LGAs. Incidents ranged from shootings in Nyango Gyel to ambushes along the Aloghom–Yilpo road and coordinated assaults on Kpasho, Hurum Gashish and Shonong Bachi. Notably, a pastor, his wife and two children were killed in Riyom, and gunmen abducted women and children in Kantana Ward. Despite increased security deployments and a presidential meeting with state leaders, the killing spree has continued. Civil society groups warn that weak intelligence and rare prosecutions fuel the cycle of violence and urge swift action to bring perpetrators to justice.
