Colombo Airport Shock: 22 Buddhist Monks Detained with 110kg of Cannabis

Colombo Airport Shock: 22 Buddhist Monks Detained with 110kg of Cannabis — 1 of 5
1 / 5

Customs officers at Colombo airport arrested 22 Buddhist monks on April 25 after uncovering around 110kg of Kush hidden inside false walls of their luggage. The monks, mainly students returning from a four-day, all-expenses-paid trip to Thailand sponsored by an unnamed donor, each carried about 5kg of the potent drug. Police later detained a 23rd monk, alleged organiser of the trip, in a Colombo suburb. Investigators also found photos and videos on the monks’ phones showing them enjoying casual holiday scenes. Appearing in court on April 26, the monks were remanded for seven days amid police claims they may have been unaware of what they were carrying.

What could drive a group of Buddhist monks to transport over 100kg of cannabis in hidden luggage walls?

I understand the curiosity, but Buddhist vows seem at odds with cannabis trafficking. Maybe we're missing key context before guessing reasons.

It's odd that an unnamed donor funded the monks' trip yet cannabis ended up concealed in their suitcases. Something feels off.

Surely not every monk on that trip was complicit; we shouldn't paint the entire group with the same brush over one scandal.

Airports should consider more thorough scanning protocols or random baggage inspections to catch sophisticated concealment methods before boarding.
