Federal Court Forfeits N150m Linked to Rep Nicholas Mutu in NDDC Kickback Probe

Federal Court Forfeits N150m Linked to Rep Nicholas Mutu in NDDC Kickback Probe

A Federal High Court in Abuja granted the final forfeiture of N150 million linked to Nicholas Mutu after an EFCC application. Investigators showed that Mutu received over N400 million in kickbacks from an NDDC consultant. The funds were laundered through his companies’ accounts at Heritage Bank. Mutu later returned N150 million but claimed it was not voluntary. He relied on a subcontract document to justify the transactions, but the consultant confirmed it was a ruse and no services were rendered. With no sufficient cause shown to challenge the interim order, Justice Abdulmalik ruled the N150 million as proceeds of unlawful activities and ordered its final forfeiture to the Federal Government.

What does this N150m forfeiture reveal about EFCC's capacity to recover kickback funds in major corruption cases?

Could this N150m forfeiture signal a shift in how kickback funds are traced and retrieved from high-profile suspects?

It's odd how the court only forfeited N150m when investigators traced over N400m in kickbacks to Mutu's accounts.

I'm not convinced this ruling actually deters other officials from laundering money through consultants.

To strengthen accountability, perhaps public agencies should enforce stricter audits on consultant payments and political officeholders' accounts.
