Flamingos’ New Goalkeeper Coach Kola Ige: Why Every Shot-Stopper Is a Coach at Heart

Flamingos’ New Goalkeeper Coach Kola Ige: Why Every Shot-Stopper Is a Coach at Heart

Former 2005 U-20 World Cup goalkeeper Kola Ige has joined the Flamingos as the team’s new Goalkeeper Coach. He argues that every goalkeeper acts as a coach on the pitch without realising it. As the last man back, a shot-stopper sees the entire field. They organise teammates, direct play, and make tactical calls instinctively. According to Ige, that awareness is the core of coaching. Ige says the appointment is an honour and another chance to serve Nigeria. He believes the reward for hard work is more responsibility and is grateful for the opportunity. When asked about his children, he confirmed he will fully support any of them who pursue football. His son Fuad, 12, is already training as a goalkeeper under his guidance.

It's interesting that Ige claims every goalkeeper coaches from the back, but that kind of instinct may not translate to actual coaching skills.

I'm not so sure every shot-stopper naturally coaches; many keepers focus on saves rather than micromanaging teammates shapes.

Teams could benefit if Ige shares simple drills that develop both shot-stopping and communication, bridging keeper instincts with coaching techniques.
