Okonjo-Iweala and Donald Duke Disagree Over 2011 Jonathan Government Appointment

A disagreement has resurfaced between former Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and former Cross River Governor Donald Duke over a meeting they reportedly had in Washington in 2011. In her 2018 book, Okonjo-Iweala wrote that Duke advised her not to accept a role in President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, allegedly because her acceptance would give the government credibility. Duke confirmed that they met but denied trying to weaken the Jonathan government. He said he only advised her to be cautious after her earlier experience in public office. The dispute has renewed criticism of Duke’s political record. Critics question his opposition to the coastal highway project and cite uncompleted projects, including the proposed Calabar light rail scheme, while arguing that his tenure is often overrated.
