How to Respond When a Loan App Posts Your Fake Obituary
Some loan apps or moneylenders resort to posting borrowers’ fake obituary posters when they default on repayment. They may even label you “WANTED” to pressure you into paying. This act is a criminal offence under Nigeria’s Criminal Code and the Cybercrime Act. Anyone who publicly declares you dead while you’re alive can face at least seven years’ imprisonment. The lender’s license may also be revoked and the company deregistered. If you receive such a threat, inform the caller or lender that you will pursue legal action. Always follow proper legal channels to recover debts—there are no shortcuts to justice. At the same time, borrowers should make reasonable efforts to repay promptly. If a lender helped you in a time of need, don’t frustrate them when it’s time to refund. I’m a Nigerian policewoman sharing this advice to help you know your rights.
