Customs Seize 22 Elephant Tusks Worth ₦126.3m, Arrest Four Suspects

Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Lagos, joined by NESREA and the Wildlife Justice Commission, intercepted 22 elephant tusks in Ofada, Mowe, Ogun State. The haul weighs 130.84 kilograms and has an estimated black-market value of ₦126.3 million. Four suspects are now in custody. The operation on June 13 combined intelligence gathering, surveillance and investigations. Customs officers also seized a vehicle used in the trafficking. Additional arrests were made in Lagos and all exhibits have been secured for prosecution under the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, and CITES regulations. The customs comptroller praised partner agencies for their support and urged the public to report suspicious wildlife shipments. He affirmed that the service will sustain enforcement actions to protect biodiversity and disrupt transnational environmental crime.
