Did Hidden Enemies Engineer the Awolowo–Akintola Rift?

Did Hidden Enemies Engineer the Awolowo–Akintola Rift?

Jealousy and manipulation have long destroyed alliances. The split between Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola remains one of the most tragic schisms in Yoruba political history. I believe both leaders were victims of outside forces that sowed discord between them. Under their joint leadership, the Western Region enjoyed a golden age of growth and social programmes, setting benchmarks that other regions struggled to match. Historical records point to ideological and personal clashes. But emerging theories suggest foreign interests and local opportunists may have exploited those differences to derail the West’s progress. This crisis still offers vital lessons on how external manipulators can undermine strong leadership.

What evidence supports the idea that external forces really drove a wedge between Awolowo and Akintola?

Are there primary sources or testimonies from that period pointing to outside parties stirring tension?

Given decades have passed, it's hard to separate rumor from fact about those outside manipulators.

I'm not convinced that jealousy alone couldn't explain their rift without needing hidden enemies behind the scenes.

Perhaps we should focus on confirming primary sources from that era before drawing conclusions about external interference.
