Abeokuta Court Remands 73-Year-Old for Alleged Abuse and Abortion Plot
On Wednesday, an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo ordered a 73-year-old man, Olarenwaju Hamid, to be remanded over allegations of sexual abuse and an attempted illegal abortion involving a 15-year-old in his care. The court arraigned him on two counts: unlawful carnal knowledge and attempt to procure an abortion. The prosecutor said the offences occurred in March at Idi-Ori, where repeated assaults led to the girl’s pregnancy. It was alleged that the defendant offered the teenager ₦50,000 to terminate her pregnancy. The prosecutor asked for a 60-day remand at Ibara Correctional Centre pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions. Magistrate A.K. Araba directed that the suspect be held at Oba Correctional Service Centre until the DPP’s advice is received. The case was adjourned to September 14 for mention.
