Uganda Arrests 13 Budaka Officials Over Alleged Rural Road Fund Mismanagement
Ugandan authorities have arrested 13 officials in Budaka District over allegations of mismanaging funds meant for rural road rehabilitation. Those detained include the district engineer, assistant engineer and roads inspector. The arrests followed an inspection by State Minister for Local Government Justine Nameere. Officials were reportedly unable to account for money allocated to roads that remain in poor condition. Some repairs were allegedly rushed only after news of the minister’s visit emerged. Investigators are also examining claims of a wider network involving unaccounted mechanical expenses, ghost workers and diverted medical supplies. While Uganda’s own leadership faces long-running criticism over corruption, the crackdown raises a broader question for Africa: will public officials who misuse infrastructure funds face real consequences?
