Makinde Warns Nigeria May Be Drifting Toward a One-Party State

Makinde Warns Nigeria May Be Drifting Toward a One-Party State

Governor Seyi Makinde has raised alarm over Nigeria’s democratic health. In his newsletter “The Business of Governance,” he warned that opposition groups are under threat and alternative platforms are being weakened. He said critics face intimidation, and many Nigerians are withdrawing from political conversations. Makinde stressed that democracy depends on a strong opposition, credible alternatives, and public trust in institutions. He warned that when dissent is stifled, accountability erodes and citizens lose faith in governance. He urged leaders and the public to remain engaged and announced plans to consult stakeholders across different sectors in the coming days to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic space.
