Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has pledged automatic employment for all 37 first-class graduates of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. He also offered free postgraduate scholarships from master’s to PhD in any public Nigerian university of their choice. At the 16th convocation ceremony held on the Igbariam campus, Soludo announced a ₦4 million cash prize for the overall best graduate, who achieved a 4.85 CGPA in Economics. This year’s ceremony saw 3,155 students graduate, including 808 postgraduates and 2,051 with Second Class Upper honours. The governor urged graduands to become innovative problem-solvers and ambassadors of the university. He renamed the Uli campus in honour of the institution’s pioneer Visitor, late Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju, and outlined plans for a sustainable funding framework for faculty and staff. The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah, was installed as COOU’s new Chancellor. Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor appealed for action against land grabbers and improvements to facilities such as lecture halls, student accommodation, staff quarters, and sports amenities.

It's encouraging for those 37 grads, but will this model be sustainable or just a political soundbite before the next election?

Automatic employment sounds great, but shouldn't first-class grads still compete fairly rather than getting guaranteed jobs?

A clear plan for integrating these grads into the civil service could help other states copy this initiative effectively.
