U17 Pedro Uzoma Unity Cup 2026 Kicks Off in Onitsha This May

U17 Pedro Uzoma Unity Cup 2026 Kicks Off in Onitsha This May

The 2026 Pedro Uzoma Unity Cup will begin on Saturday, May 16 at Ezechima School Field, Awka Road, Onitsha. Nine under-17 clubs will compete in a grassroots tournament. Group stage matches run from May 16 to June 13, with quarter-finals scheduled for June 4–8 and semi-finals on June 12. The final date will be announced soon. Former professional footballer Pedro Chidiebere Uzoma sponsors the event to unearth young talent and boost football development at the grassroots level in Onitsha. Teams are drawn into three groups: Group A features 12 Star FC, Lion Star FC and Jombo FC; Group B includes Michael FC, Winners FC and Niger Tracas FC; Group C has 3 Stars FC, Sure FC and Elite FC. Defending champions 12 Star FC open the tournament against Lion Star FC at 3pm on May 16. Cash prizes await the winner, runner-up and third-placed team, with special awards for outstanding players. Organisers say the annual event will engage youth, deter crime and serve as a scouting platform for academies.

Almost a month just for group play seems ambitious for grassroots clubs with limited resources.

Not convinced nine teams need a full group stage before knockouts; a shorter format might keep excitement higher.

Clubs and volunteers should help maintain the pitch and schedule match slots evenly to prevent burnout during the monthlong group stage.
