Lagos Court Voids FG’s 292-Hectare Onigbanko Land Acquisition, Awards N312m in Damages

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has declared the Federal Government’s takeover of 292 hectares of Onigbanko ancestral land along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway null and void. Justice Abdulfattah Lawal ruled the acquisition unlawful after finding that no statutory notices were served, no compensation was paid and constitutional procedures were breached. The judge noted that land originally acquired for the Nigerian Navy was later diverted to private developers. The court dismissed all technical objections from the government and property company. It awarded the Onigbanko community ₦300 million for trespass and illegal occupation, plus ₦12 million for litigation costs. The judgment underscores the need for governments to follow due process and pay fair compensation when exercising land acquisition powers.
