From Grief and Family Duties to Best Graduating PhD: Dr. Ubani’s Inspiring Journey

Senior Advocate Monday Onyekachi Ubani has fulfilled a decades-long dream. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Law from Babcock University and emerged as the best graduating PhD student. Originally set to start immediately after his master’s degree, he delayed the programme on advice to study abroad. Family responsibilities then took priority. He waited until his children completed their postgraduate studies before returning to doctoral work. He faced steep challenges, from mastering statistics to balancing a busy legal career, family duties and religious commitments. Personal tragedies, including the loss of both parents, led to temporary withdrawals. He credits a university professor’s encouragement for keeping him focused. Now he plans to join academia and pursue a professorship. He has already published seven scholarly articles and believes a PhD is a tool for critical thinking and meaningful contributions to society.
