Bianca Ojukwu Warns South Africa Over Harassment and Killings of Nigerians
The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to South Africa over renewed harassment, humiliation and extrajudicial killings of Nigerian citizens. Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu spoke after a call with her South African counterpart, focusing on recent anti-migrant protests in Durban. Ojukwu said Nigeria’s top priority is safely evacuating citizens who wish to return. She demanded accountability for those behind the killings and urged South African authorities to uphold the rule of law. While heavy security prevented violence at the Durban rally, Nigerians were advised to close shops and stay indoors for safety. The minister also condemned inflammatory rhetoric from anti-foreigner political groups. President Bola Tinubu has directed Nigerian missions in South Africa to set up crisis notification units and encouraged citizens facing threats to contact local security forces immediately.
