Soaring LPG Prices in Abuja Drive Residents to Charcoal and Firewood
Sharp hikes in cooking gas prices in the Federal Capital Territory have forced many households and food vendors to return to traditional fuels. Within months, the cost of LPG rose from around ₦1,200 per kilogram to ₦2,000 per kilogram. Vendors and consumers cite supply shortages, foreign-exchange pressures, higher depot fees, and rising transportation costs as the main drivers. Food sellers in Gwarimpa, Dutse, and Kubwa say they now rely on firewood, charcoal, or electric hot plates to protect their profit margins. Charcoal and firewood distributors report surging demand and rising prices. A bag of charcoal that cost ₦6,500 now sells for ₦8,000, while four pieces of firewood fetch the same price as six pieces previously. Residents warn that continued gas price increases will further strain household budgets and small businesses. Stakeholders are calling on government to stabilise LPG supply and prices before more families abandon cooking gas altogether.
