Abia State Launches 17 Local Emergency Committees to Mitigate Flood Risks

Abia State Launches 17 Local Emergency Committees to Mitigate Flood Risks — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Abia State has reactivated emergency committees in all 17 local government areas ahead of the rainy season. Residents are urged to avoid dumping waste in drains and keep surroundings clean to reduce flood threats. The Commissioner for Environment warned that climate change is already affecting communities with shifting rainfall and rising temperatures. He said proactive measures like clearing drainage channels and responsible waste disposal remain the best defence against flooding. Public awareness campaigns are running across radio, community meetings and road walks. The government will also prepare temporary shelters and coordinate with development partners to support vulnerable communities if severe flooding occurs. Officials called for nature-based solutions like widespread tree planting and discouraged indiscriminate felling. They stressed that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility crucial for the safety and wellbeing of future generations.

But what systems will these committees use to track and enforce regular drain clearing across different areas?

Reactivating committees is a start, but past rainy seasons proved little action followed warnings about waste disposal in drainage channels.

I'm not convinced cleaning drains alone reduces flood risks without proper enforcement and community engagement.

Local residents could form small teams to monitor gutters weekly, report blockages early, and encourage neighbours during each rainy season.
