Sagbama Elders Condemn Suspension of Bayelsa’s Only Female Council Chair
Elders and stakeholders in Sagbama Local Government Area have condemned the suspension of council chairman Alice Tangi Allen, describing it as unconstitutional and undemocratic. The critics questioned the deployment of police and soldiers to seal the council office. They also argued that a court order restraining her removal was ignored by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly. Stakeholders said the petition signed by four councillors did not represent a majority of the council. They called on the state government and lawmakers to respect the rule of law and democratic procedures.
