Nigeria Receives $187.3 Million in US Aid as Congress Proposes Stricter Conditions
Updated US State Department data shows Nigeria received $187,352,312 in foreign assistance in 2026. It ranked second in sub-Saharan Africa after Ethiopia. Most funding flowed through USAID, accounting for $186,715,308. Other agencies contributed smaller sums, including the State Department, Defense, Interior, Agriculture and Transportation. US lawmakers are considering new provisions in the 2027 appropriations bill. They could withhold up to 50% of aid until Nigeria meets benchmarks on security, human rights and counterterrorism. The Federal Government rejects allegations of religious persecution and insists insecurity affects all Nigerians. It remains committed to working with the US on security reforms.
