Two Women, Teenager and Infant Flee ISWAP Camp in Gwoza and Surrender to Troops

Two Women, Teenager and Infant Flee ISWAP Camp in Gwoza and Surrender to Troops — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Four relatives of suspected insurgents escaped the Kunde enclave in the Mandara Mountains and surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai on July 10. The group included two women, a 15-year-old boy and a 10-month-old infant. They told investigators that relentless military pressure and severe food shortages forced them to abandon the camp. Troops of C Company, 192 Battalion (Mechanised), recovered ₦32,100 from the family during screening. Security sources say ongoing ground and air offensives are isolating terrorist enclaves across Borno, prompting more women and children to break away and seek safety under Army custody.

What do you think pushed a 10-month-old infant and other family members to leave the ISWAP camp and surrender?

Chai, you're right – those living conditions must've been so bad that even a ten-month-old's safety mattered more than anything.

It's unusual to see insurgents' relatives flee from Gwoza's Kunde enclave so openly and trust military forces with their safety.

I'm not convinced these family members surrendered solely out of fear; there might be other hidden reasons behind this escape.

Security agencies should follow up these defectors with proper counselling and integration programs to prevent them from returning to insurgency.
