Ella Onojuvwevwo Shatters 27-Year Nigerian 400m Record with Historic Sub-50 Run — 1 of 4
1 / 4

At the Battle on the Bayou in Baton Rouge, LSU senior Ella Onojuvwevwo stunned the track with a 49.59-second 400m. It is the fastest time by a Nigerian woman since Falilat Ogunkoya’s 1998 mark. The 21-year-old cut nearly a full second off her previous outdoor best. She now tops the world rankings for 2026 and sits tenth in NCAA history. Her performance ends a 27-year drought for sub-50 runs by Nigerian women. Ella moves to fourth on Nigeria’s all-time list and seventh in African history. This breakthrough follows her recent African indoor record. She is closing in on Ogunkoya’s national record of 49.10 seconds.

This 49.59-second time shatters a 27-year national record, but global finals often demand only marginally faster splits.

Record books love fresh names, yet one standout performance doesn't guarantee a new era without consistent backing and support.

To build on this momentum, local federations should enhance grassroots coaching, upgrade training facilities, and support emerging female sprinters nationwide.
