New Mexico Court Orders Meta to Pay $567m Over Harm to Young Users

A New Mexico court has ordered Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to pay $567 million to address harm to young people linked to its platforms. About $420 million will fund treatment services, while the rest will support awareness, prevention and screening programmes over five years. The payment comes in addition to $375 million in civil penalties awarded by jurors in March. The case found that Meta knowingly harmed children’s mental health and concealed information about child sexual exploitation risks on its platforms. The court also ordered Meta to improve safety notices, age-assurance tools and protections for underage users in New Mexico. Meta must report on its compliance twice a year and says it will appeal the ruling.
