Baruwa Faction Seizes NURTW Secretariat, Tears Down MC Oluomo’s Portraits

Baruwa Faction Seizes NURTW Secretariat, Tears Down MC Oluomo’s Portraits

A faction of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers led by Tajudeen Baruwa has taken control of the union’s national headquarters in Abuja. Members loyal to Baruwa removed and destroyed portraits of MC Oluomo, who was elected national president in November 2024 but whose leadership was challenged in court. The takeover follows a recent court ruling in favour of Baruwa amid a two-year leadership dispute. Videos circulating on social media show the dramatic removal of Oluomo’s images from the walls. Shortly after the faction’s takeover, police arrested Tajudeen Baruwa at the secretariat. The union remains embroiled in internal crisis as both sides await further legal decisions.

I'm not convinced this move will automatically harm NURTW's standing; internal politics often shift without broader fallout.

Tearing portraits feels symbolic but won't solve any real issues within the union leadership.

Union members should call for a transparent mediation process to address leadership disputes before more damage occurs.
