UN Probe: Darfur Siege by Sudan’s RSF Amounts to Genocide
A United Nations fact-finding mission has concluded that Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out mass killings, abductions, gang rapes and forced starvation during last year’s siege of al-Fashir. Survivors describe being assaulted among the bodies of slain civilians, including family members. The report finds that the RSF imposed a prolonged blockade, preventing aid deliveries and targeting food production, in what amounts to the war crime of starvation. Witness statements and documentation show a systematic pattern of encirclement and attacks on civilian infrastructure. The RSF has denied these allegations, calling them fabrications by its enemies. The UN human rights chief warns that similar atrocities could unfold around al-Obeid, where hundreds of thousands, including displaced people, face the threat of large-scale abuses. Members of the UN Human Rights Council have launched an urgent inquiry and are calling on the international community to act swiftly to prevent further catastrophe.
