Ukraine’s Former Defence Minister Calls for Wartime Elections

Ukraine’s Former Defence Minister Calls for Wartime Elections

Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has called for a legal and safe way to hold elections while the country remains at war with Russia. He argued that democracy should not be suspended indefinitely because of the invasion. Ukraine has operated under martial law since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, and elections are currently suspended. Fedorov’s call follows his dismissal from the defence ministry and growing public debate over corruption, military leadership and the direction of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government. Critics believe Zelensky is becoming too focused on retaining power while ordinary Ukrainians bear the human cost of the war. They argue that Ukraine needs accountable leaders who put citizens’ lives and long-term peace ahead of political interests.
