NDLEA Uncovers Wife’s Fake Death Scheme to Shield Escaped Edo Drug Suspect
Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju of the NDLEA in Edo State revealed how a suspect’s wife filed a false death affidavit to stall prosecution. Ibrahim Yusuf Lawal was first arrested in February 2022 at Ugbekun Junction, Esan Central LGA with over 7kg of psychotropic substances. He was granted bail but absconded before his trial. In October 2024, his wife swore he died of tuberculosis and was buried in Kogi State. Further investigation showed Lawal was alive; operatives arrested him in a covert operation. Lawal was re-arraigned at the Federal High Court in Benin City, with the next hearing set for June 22, 2026. The NDLEA warned all involved in this attempt to pervert justice will face sanctions.
