FG Says Tertiary Education Reforms Will Reduce Financial Barriers for Students

FG Says Tertiary Education Reforms Will Reduce Financial Barriers for Students

Education Minister Tunji Alausa says the Federal Government’s tertiary education reforms are intended to ensure that qualified Nigerians are not denied higher education because of financial hardship. He pointed to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which offers interest-free loans to eligible students, as part of the effort. The minister said more than ₦1 trillion has been invested in tertiary education over the past two years. He listed ₦250 billion for new hostels, over ₦150 billion for renovations, more than ₦130 billion for medical-school upgrades, and nearly ₦110 billion for engineering education. The meeting also reviewed plans to expand Occupational Therapy, Audiology, and Speech and Language Therapy training. The committee said delays in accessing TETFund support remain a major challenge to implementing its programme plans.

Exactly, the support will only help if students can easily understand the requirements and complete the application without unnecessary stress.

Interest-free loans sound helpful, but reforms should be judged by whether students can actually obtain support when they need it.

Clear eligibility rules, simple applications, and timely disbursement would make the loan fund more useful to students.
