Benue Police Arrest Two Women Over Alleged Fake Kidnap Ransom Plot

Benue Police Arrest Two Women Over Alleged Fake Kidnap Ransom Plot — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Benue State Police Command has arrested two women accused of staging a kidnapping to obtain ransom from one suspect’s mother. Police said the case was reported on July 15 after the mother, who lives in Lagos, received a call from an unknown number claiming her daughter had been kidnapped. The caller allegedly demanded ransom. Operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit traced the suspects to a hotel in Makurdi. Investigators allege that the pair planned the false kidnap to deceive the mother into paying money. The suspects remain in custody and will be charged after investigations are completed. Police warned that fake kidnapping cases waste resources needed for genuine emergencies.

What usually makes families recognise a ransom call as suspicious before money is sent, especially when the caller claims a relative is involved?

It is a serious allegation, but people should avoid treating every detail as settled until the case is properly handled.

Families should verify such calls through known relatives and report them quickly, rather than relying only on the number that contacted them.
