2027 Election Campaigns Begin as Tinubu, Obi, Atiku and Others Set for Rematch
Campaigns for Nigeria’s 2027 general election have begun, with the economy, cost of living and insecurity expected to dominate public debate ahead of the January 16 presidential poll. President Bola Tinubu is seeking a second term after reforms including fuel-subsidy removal contributed to a sharp rise in living costs. While inflation reportedly eased to 15.4 per cent in July, many Nigerians continue to face poverty, high transport costs and insecurity. The race is expected to feature Tinubu, Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and other candidates. Political leaders and parties have also signed a National Peace Accord, with Obi calling for credible, violence-free elections where votes count. Concerns remain over voter turnout, vote buying and the safety of travellers returning to their home communities to vote.
