Abia Police Command Dismisses Misconduct Claims in Akwete Incident
The Abia State Police Command has responded to a viral video alleging officer misconduct and firearm misuse at the Akwete Divisional Police Headquarters. The command says the footage misrepresents what actually happened. According to the police, the incident began when officers investigated the death of eight-year-old Chiamaka Stanley. The girl was reportedly struck by a stone thrown by her father during a family dispute. The family concealed the tragedy and prepared for a private burial without notifying law enforcement. When operatives arrived to secure the scene and invite the family for questioning, some relatives and youths resisted access. The command states no live rounds were discharged at protesters. Officers documented the dug grave and withdrew to avoid escalation, then formally summoned the family. The suspect and case were transferred the same day to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. The Commissioner of Police urged residents to disregard unverified reports and cooperate with the police to maintain order.
