Emmanuel Petit Blasts CAF Over AFCON Title Revocation

Emmanuel Petit Blasts CAF Over AFCON Title Revocation — 1 of 5
1 / 5

Former Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has condemned CAF’s decision to revoke Senegal’s AFCON title. He called the ruling “ridiculous” and warned it damages the reputation of African football. The dispute arose after Senegal temporarily left the pitch during the final. Petit argued that officials should have enforced the rules on the spot and that a fine would have been enough instead of stripping the trophy months later. “The referee knew the rules but did nothing. Now they take away Senegal’s crown two months later. This is a disgrace for African football,” Petit said in a recent interview. He added that the timing, just before a major global tournament, undermines the progress African teams have made and harms fans across the continent.

I don't see why credibility must suffer. Enforcing rules shows CAF cares about fair play, not just trophies.

CAF and national teams should improve communication protocols to prevent mass walk-offs and preserve both match integrity and public trust.
