Colo-Colo Move Could Force Cape Verde Goalkeeper Vozinha to Change Shirt Name

Colo-Colo Move Could Force Cape Verde Goalkeeper Vozinha to Change Shirt Name

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha could wear a different name on his shirt if his proposed move to Chilean club Colo-Colo is completed. Chilean league rules generally require players to use a paternal or maternal surname, rather than a nickname. Vozinha's full name is Josimar José Évora Dias, while “Vozinha” is the name most fans recognise. Colo-Colo president Aníbal Mosa says the club has approached the Chilean football authorities about a possible exemption. Vozinha is expected to sign an initial six-month deal, with an option to extend it for another year.

Would supporters still recognise him as easily if Colo-Colo requires a surname instead of Vozinha on the shirt?

I agree, a shirt-name change could take some getting used to for fans who know him by Vozinha.

It is interesting how a league naming rule can affect a player's familiar identity, even when the football remains the same.

The rule may be straightforward, but shirt names are also part of how fans connect with players, so changing it is not entirely minor.

If the move happens, using his approved surname while keeping Vozinha in club communications could make the transition easier for supporters.
