Zamfara Market Airstrike: Over 100 Killed in Military Bombing
A military airstrike on Tumfa market in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State reportedly killed at least 117 people, including civilians and bandits. The strike followed surveillance flights that returned hours later to launch the bombardment. Communication challenges delayed reports of the attack. Residents say many traders and food vendors, including young girls, were among the dead. Hospitals in Shinkafi and Gusau treated dozens of injured survivors. Locals describe Tumfa and neighbouring villages as under bandit control. They allege armed groups impose levies on communities and act as de facto authorities, while civilians have little choice but to live among them. Amnesty International has called for an independent probe into the civilian toll. The Defence Headquarters denies that innocent lives were lost in the market airstrike.
