Kano Ranked World’s 9th Most Populous City as Population Nears 17.5 Million
Kano has been ranked the world’s ninth most populous city in the 2026 World Population Review estimates, with about 17.5 million residents. The figure places it ahead of Lagos, New York and Istanbul, and second in Africa only to Kinshasa. The city’s growth is linked to high birth rates, migration, insecurity-driven displacement, trade and the expansion of surrounding communities into the Kano metropolis. Its population could exceed 20 million by 2030 if the current growth rate continues. The rapid expansion brings major opportunities for commerce, investment and a youthful workforce. But it is also increasing pressure on housing, roads, jobs, schools, hospitals, water supply and sanitation. Analysts say coordinated urban planning and infrastructure investment will be essential if Kano is to turn its population boom into lasting development.
